How to Safely Share Your Health Information With Family

Personal Health Inspector Team4 min read

Wanting to share health information with a family member — so a caregiver stays informed, or a spouse has visibility in an emergency — shouldn't require handing over full access to everything. The right kind of sharing gives someone exactly what they need, and nothing more.

The privacy-vs-sharing tension

Full account sharing (the same login, no boundaries) solves the "they can see it" problem but creates a new one: no control over what they see, and no way to undo it cleanly later. Not sharing at all avoids that risk but leaves the caregiver without the information they actually need.

What "safe sharing" should actually mean

  • Permission levels — the ability to grant access to specific categories (medications only, or a full view) rather than everything by default.
  • Read-only by default — a caregiver seeing information isn't the same as a caregiver being able to change it.
  • Revocable, instantly — access that can be removed the moment it's no longer appropriate, without any lingering exposure.
  • Invited, not assumed — the account owner chooses who gets access, rather than it being automatic.

How this actually works in practice

Personal Health Inspector's caregiver system implements exactly this model: you invite a caregiver by email, choose their permission level (from a single category up to full read-only access), and can revoke it at any time. The caregiver never gets your login — they get their own scoped view. See how it works on the Family & Caregiver page, and how the underlying account is protected on our security page.
